Half-Assed Philanthropy

datetime November 5, 2014 10:33 PM

I’ve decided to do three nice things that require almost no work on my part, because that pretty well sums up the kind of guy I am.

1. Anyone wanna sculpt at Templecon?

This year will be my fifth Templecon, and the first where I’m not planning to play much Warmachine. I’ll be playing in whatever Infinity events they have and probably getting in a few games of Grind and Thunderdome, but otherwise I’m mostly just planning to hang out and do whatever. During this period of whatever-doing, I was thinking that it might be fun to sit in a hotel room for like twelve hours straight and sculpt an army man. I mean, I’m paying enough for the bloody room, I might as well get some use out of the damned thing. 😛

Would anyone be interested in such an activity? Twelve hours is enough time to get a dude from wire to partly dressed; I’d be covering things like armature-rigging, fimo mechanics, useful tools, basic anatomy, faces, and clothing, with lots of random pointers in between about general technique and good habits.

Boosting the Signal

In between my truly amazing projects, I also do a lot that merely evoke an offhand “Ehh, that’s kinda neat, I suppose”. Most aren’t really worth blogging about, but here and there I find one that I can tap out a thousand or so words about as a filler.

Today we’re going to look at one of those.

TEMPLATES! IN! SPAAAAAAAAAACE!

Quick update: I’ve had a couple requests for the templates I used to make my foamcore buildings, so I quickly cleaned up the files this morning and am offering them here to anyone who wants to walk in the footsteps of madness.

There’s a PDF version for anyone who just wants to make the same buildings I did, and I’ve also uploaded my Illustrator files in case anyone wants to make variations on my building shapes:

Foamcore Construction Templates:

Craft Foam Paneling Templates:

The templates are a bit sparse on instructions (though I did put a recipe on each floorplan to indicate which walls are needed to make each one), but you can probably get the gist of it if you check out the original article.

UPDATE: I added the templates used for the outer panels as well. My walkthrough for how to cut out and apply those can be found somewhere in this rambling mess.

If anyone does end up making their own buildings from these templates, be sure to send me pictures. 😀

FOAMCORE! IN! SPAAAAAAAAAAAAACE!

Update: Looking for the templates used to make the terrain in this article? They’re available here: Templates! In! Spaaaaaaaaaaaace!

Two months ago, I posted drawings for a set of modular Infinity buildings. I took some time off after that to paint my Space Mans, but now I’ve come back to my beloved Space Buildings and gotten them to a point where they’re playable and somewhat bloggable.

For those who need a refresher, here’s basically what I’m building:

The terrain set is designed to represent a series of temporary, pre-fabricated buildings that can be used to represent new colonies or research installations. The buildings use a standardized connector to let pieces be joined together in any number of combinations, ensuring that the terrain doesn’t get stale to play on.

So, let’s see what I’ve knocked together so far. 🙂

Space Chimney Sweeps

datetime August 23, 2014 11:00 PM

These last two weeks have seen a frenzy a frenzy of activity here at the Amazingatorium. Four posts in sixteen days?! WHAT MADNESS IS THIS?!

Today I round out this non-stop rollercoaster ride of bloggery with easily the least interesting installment of the series: the dirt-cheap grunt troops who accompany my Noble Space Priests in their duties, accomplishing crucial mission objectives while the larger, more devout officers are running around blatantly ignoring the sixth commandment.

The Other Guys

datetime August 16, 2014 9:00 PM

On the list of reasons that I like Infinity, the second biggest (following respectfully behind SPACE BUILDINGS, which will forever be first in my heart) is the quality of the model range. Corvus Belli’s minis have a level of dynamism and a clarity of design that I just don’t see in most other gaming ranges– every model is doing something, and the models are covered in details that feel planned-out and somewhat plausible.

However, this was not always the case. If you go to any of the faction galleries on the Infinity website and scroll down, there is a sharp distinction that occurs between the top 2/3 of each faction’s models and the bottom 1/3. Namely, that the old models are just awful. The designs are very bland, the poses are bizarre, and the sculpting quality is very low, with very soft, round shapes instead of the sharp detail the range later came to be known for.
