More Than Words

Today, after a painfully long wait, the MayaNet list-building app has finally been updated for N3. No more must I construct lists using multiple books and a sheet of paper, brothers and sisters! After months of grueling arithmetic, Spud is free!

This wondrous event demanded that I employ more than mere text to express my joy and gratitude, so I dug out my tablet and got to work.

Say it with me, brothers and sisters!

[ Cropped and without text ]

May the blessings of Space Jesus be forever upon His children, Apollo and ToadChild.

Amen.

175 Years In The Future, There Are Only Panels

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I have always opted to buy love. Really, it was the only option available to me– given my staggering menu of crippling personal flaws and blatantly antisocial attitudes, the only way I’ve been able to maintain any sort of social circle throughout my adult life has been through the balancing contribution of my works. My goal has always been to inspire in those around me, both in my physical and virtual spaces, a difficult moment of indecision.

“Okay, sure,” they say to themselves. “Spud may be kind of an asshole, and he does leave his crap lying around on four different tables wherever he goes, and the relentless bragging does get pretty f***ing irritating sometimes… but on the other hand… man, that blowfish was pretty awesome. Maybe if I put up with him for a while he’ll make me something pretty like that.”

And in that moment, they’ve unwittingly entangled themselves in my calculated cycle of grudging tolerance. Putting up with Spud does not, in the end, pay off for most people, but after years of practice I’ve perfected a manner of making it look like it might. I guess I’m sort of the lottery of human beings– a horrific investment obscured by really good marketing.

Boosting the Signal

In between my truly amazing projects, I also do a lot that merely evoke an offhand “Ehh, that’s kinda neat, I suppose”. Most aren’t really worth blogging about, but here and there I find one that I can tap out a thousand or so words about as a filler.

Today we’re going to look at one of those.

TEMPLATES! IN! SPAAAAAAAAAACE!

Quick update: I’ve had a couple requests for the templates I used to make my foamcore buildings, so I quickly cleaned up the files this morning and am offering them here to anyone who wants to walk in the footsteps of madness.

There’s a PDF version for anyone who just wants to make the same buildings I did, and I’ve also uploaded my Illustrator files in case anyone wants to make variations on my building shapes:

Foamcore Construction Templates:

Craft Foam Paneling Templates:

The templates are a bit sparse on instructions (though I did put a recipe on each floorplan to indicate which walls are needed to make each one), but you can probably get the gist of it if you check out the original article.

UPDATE: I added the templates used for the outer panels as well. My walkthrough for how to cut out and apply those can be found somewhere in this rambling mess.

If anyone does end up making their own buildings from these templates, be sure to send me pictures. 😀

FOAMCORE! IN! SPAAAAAAAAAAAAACE!

Update: Looking for the templates used to make the terrain in this article? They’re available here: Templates! In! Spaaaaaaaaaaaace!

Two months ago, I posted drawings for a set of modular Infinity buildings. I took some time off after that to paint my Space Mans, but now I’ve come back to my beloved Space Buildings and gotten them to a point where they’re playable and somewhat bloggable.

For those who need a refresher, here’s basically what I’m building:

The terrain set is designed to represent a series of temporary, pre-fabricated buildings that can be used to represent new colonies or research installations. The buildings use a standardized connector to let pieces be joined together in any number of combinations, ensuring that the terrain doesn’t get stale to play on.

So, let’s see what I’ve knocked together so far. 🙂
