Improvised Mediocrity

This will eventually be a post about some space terrain.

But, quick tangent to talk about how great I am first.

I am, as the title of this blog accurately states, amazing. And the things that I build have a strong tendency to manifest that same property. However, such quality of output does not happen on its own. While my most amazing amazingness appears to be born purely out of brilliant ideas and skilled implementation, there is a crucial step whose importance even I tend to forget: planning.

I am a very good planner (in that I’m good at anticipating most of the elements of a future project that require preconceptualization, and most of the problems that I will need to solve along the way) and a competent enough concept artist, and a lengthy concept stage always dramatically improves the quality of my final products. When Aleph cast its digital gaze upon NeoCanada, it saw a Space Nation in crisis. Ingratitude, discourtesy, and poutine shortages had gripped its people, leaving the Human Sphere’s politest neighbour in chaos.

However, Aleph did not despair. It knew that the good people of NeoCanada could return to the straight and snowy path, if only they had a inspirational figure to lead them there. And so the AI dug through the annals of NeoCanadian history to find exactly what USAriadna’s Hat was missing:

So, I know I already posted this month, but, uh… I blacked out after eating some questionable pork this morning, and when I came to in the early evening, there was a scale model of a cheese sandwich mounted on a plinth sitting on my desk.

And based on the pictures I found on my camera, I’m pretty sure I’m responsible. 🙁

I haven’t been terribly productive for the past six months. However, while I’ve generally failed to successfully make things, the rate at which I plan to make things has not really slowed down. Most of these plans take the form of vague outlines in the back of my head or excited-but-fruitless discussions with my friends and associates. A precious few plans, though, have passed the important barrier of being committed to paper.

A concept in my head has about a 10% chance of seeing the light of day. A concept that makes it to the drawing stage jumps to about 80%. The project might be tackled right away or it may sleep for a few years before I find the time and enthusiasm to begin labouring, but sooner or later, Spud Art usually becomes Spud Tangible Objects.

With that said, let’s take a look at something that I will probably build… eventually… maybe. ~_~

Freelance Murderthieves

Toward the end of 2016, my long-running Pathfinder group got bored with our campaign and decided to try something else. We’d been interested in dipping our toes into 5th Edition D&D for a while, just to see how the game had changed, so my associate, Rich, volunteered to run the first published campaign, which is titled “Something Something Dragons”.

I’m pretty sure that’s it.

Anyway.

D&D characters are basically the only things Spud enjoys drawing, so I’ve spent the past month giddily scratching out illustrations for our four brave looter/arsonists. And because I knew I would need to squeeze a blog article out of the exercise, I recorded the colouring process to produce time lapse art videos set to thematically appropriate music.

So, let’s meet the new family!
