It is excerpted from <a href=\"http:\/\/losthemisphere.com\/blog\/22743\" target=\"_blank\">Free Time Black Hole, Episode 108<\/a>. The video I mention is from Miniature Mentor: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.miniaturementor.com\/painting_tutorials.html\">Miniature Sculpting with James Van Schaik<\/a> (you need to scroll down a bit to find it).<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/losthemisphere.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/ep108_succubus_24.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This is about the fourth or fifth time I\u2019m using the technique I picked up from the sculpting video I bought in December (click here, scroll to the green lady with the giant gun). My old method involved one giant putty blob that was turned into a face in a single step (and produced awful results), whereas the new method is much more methodical, adding tiny putty shreds one piece at a time.<\/p>\n<p>The results are <em>far<\/em> superior. Thanks, Mr. Van Schaik! \ud83d\ude00<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/losthemisphere.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/ep108_succubus_25.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>So, once the eyes are dry inside the skull, I add four small putty blobs around them: a wide piece on the mouth, thin straps down the sides, and a thicker piece on top to form the brow.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/losthemisphere.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/ep108_succubus_26.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I use a Privateer hoe tool to smush them together and form what I call the \u201cNinja Mask Stage\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/losthemisphere.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/ep108_succubus_27.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Next, I add individual facial features, one by one. This putty snake is going to be her upper lip and palate.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/losthemisphere.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/ep108_succubus_28.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Once it\u2019s stuck on, I use a flat clayshaper to blend it downward into the head.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/losthemisphere.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/ep108_succubus_29.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Next up, I take a much smaller putty snake and stick it on as the lower lip.<\/p>\n<p>The tiny shred on the end of my clayshaper there?<\/p>\n<p>Twice as big as I needed. Had to cut it in half with a knife.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/losthemisphere.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/ep108_succubus_30.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Once it\u2019s cut to the right size, I stick it on. She still looks like Homer Simpson, but at least that puts her in the \u201cvaguely human\u201d category, at long last. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/losthemisphere.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/ep108_succubus_31.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I spend a few minutes smoothing everything out, getting a good shape on the mouth, and also spending some time on the eye shape and brow. I judge that the profile is starting to look how I want it, so I move onto the nose.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/losthemisphere.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/ep108_succubus_32.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s her nose.<\/p>\n<p>That tiny speck there.<\/p>\n<p>THESE PUTTY BITS ARE SO BLOODY TINY. @_@<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/losthemisphere.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/ep108_succubus_33.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I like the design of the Nyss from Matt Wilson\u2019s original concepts, where they have large, angular noses (I guess I\u2019d compare their noses to Claire Danes\u2013 not unattractive by any means, but definitely larger than the norm). This means putting a fairly substantial putty wad onto her face, which doesn\u2019t look so great at this stage.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/losthemisphere.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/ep108_succubus_34.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Here I\u2019ve blended the edges into the face, but haven\u2019t shaped it yet.<\/p>\n<p><em>(I meant to take another picture of the final nose profile, but I forgot. You can see two pictures down.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/losthemisphere.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/ep108_succubus_35.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The putty wads get smaller and smaller. Here I\u2019m adding her eyelids. Left is raw, right is blended to the head.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/losthemisphere.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/ep108_succubus_36.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Things are looking pretty smooth, but when I check the profile, she\u2019s looking a bit simian. I make a note to move the mouth upward a smidge, and reshape the brow slightly.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/losthemisphere.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/ep108_succubus_37.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This infinitesimal speck? That\u2019s going to be the lower eyelids.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, lids, plural. Gotta cut it in half because right now it\u2019s TOO BIG!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/losthemisphere.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/ep108_succubus_38.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The hardest thing about working with pieces this small isn\u2019t manipulating them\u2013 it\u2019s <em>not losing them.<\/em> I\u2019m not kidding, it\u2019s incredibly easy to let a tool roll over one of these, and then you never see it again. @_@<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/losthemisphere.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/ep108_succubus_39.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I use a pointy clayshaper to stick them on. I find clayshapers are better for applying putty wads than metal tools, as the putty doesn\u2019t tend to want to let go of the metal.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/losthemisphere.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/ep108_succubus_40.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I use the same pointy clayshaper to smooth them into the face, and then spend about 30 minutes poking, pushing, and pulling until I have a face I\u2019m happy with.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/losthemisphere.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/ep108_succubus_41.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I may still make her nose a tiny bit longer, but otherwise I\u2019m pretty thrilled with how she came out. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<h2>-Spud<\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This is the cleanest example I&#8217;ve published for how to sculpt a face.
